Now I want USO America-Cake for breakfast. An interesting note - ‘42 DeSotos had a cigarette dispenser option for the steering wheel. I am not making this up.

Actually, as perverse as it sounds, a 2JZ is a better option. Straight six to straight six.

Let’s not pretend. We all know the right answer is a Deutz air cooled diesel.

Well, that’s certainly *a* right answer. Actually, if you could adapt it to the existing two-stage gearbox (clutch + torque converter + two-speed manual) it would do really well. The torque would be a major plus and the the fluid drive would kill NVH and driveline shock stone dead.

The sole reason that a motorhome in my family on a ‘78 or so Dodge truck chassis has a commercial vehicles plate including DeSoto, quite a few years after the last DeSoto car rolled off the assembly line...

Always hated the fact that the concealed headlamps weren’t reintroduced after the war.

FDR had a much fancier cigarette dispenser that would also *light* the cigarette installed in his Ford. Not a factory option, though.
There were others - Getty Images has this one as being in ‘31:

That’s awesome. Why don’t we have sweet options like that anymore?

There’s a whole tradition of Rube Goldbergian mechanical tinkering that’s been lost, which is a shame.
